Care
Cultured freshwater pearls are farmed and harvested from freshwater mussels. The pearls are an organic gem, mostly composed of calcium carbonate. Softer than most gemstones, care should be taken to store your pearls separately from other jewelry to avoid accidental scratching. Do not store your pearls near heat or direct sunlight as these conditions tend to dry out pearls.
Cultured freshwater pearls will discolor if exposed to acids. Avoid contact with perfumes, hair care products and household cleaners. To keep your pearls clean from contaminants, periodically wipe them with a soft, damp cloth after wearing.
Pearls can be cleaned with water and a mild soap (such as Ivory) if they become grimy. Rinse thoroughly with water and allow to air dry on a towel for about 24 hours before wearing.
