Stampede String
Our stampede string isn't only for ranchers working cattle on the open range. Anyone who wants to keep their hat from blowing away will find it useful. This handcrafted stampede string has two, four plait braids of kangaroo leather joined together with a sliding knot. Two cotter pins slide between the sweatband and the hat body. Once bent, they provide a secure attachment of the stampede string. The stampede string is available in Natural Tan, Black or Whiskey. The Natural Tan darkens with sunlight. Our own production, made in the USA.
Do you live outside the US? Due to strict US export regulations, we are only able to ship kangaroo leather products outside the US by adhering to the US Fish and Wildlife Service export inspection procedures.

Stampede String or Chin Strap?
Chin straps, known in cattle country as stampede strings, ensure against loss of your hat in wind or brush. Our Stampede String attaches securily with two cotter pins which slide between the sweatband and the hat body for easy attachment to a hat. The Stampede String works well with all our Akubras, our Panama Hats and our Lizard Head Hat.
If you are purchasing a stampede string and Akubra hat, Panama hat or Lizard Head Hat at the same time and would like us to attach the stampede string to the hat, please request that service in the Special Instructions box during Check Out. We are happy to do so.
In the early 1960's when we started importing Akubras to the US, all Akubras had chin strap hooks. Akubra gradually dropped the chin strap hooks and is no longer manufacturing hats with chin strap hooks (apart from the Slouch). Our Stampede String works well with Akubras without or with chin strap hooks. If you own a hat with chin strap hooks, or are purchasing one of our remaining Akubra Hats Still Stocked with Chin Strap Hooks, you may prefer our Chin Strap.

Our Stampede String has two cotter pins which slide between the sweatband and the hat body for easy attachment to a hat. Hold the cotter pins tightly together and push them through the stitching where the sweatband meets the body. Pull the pins completely through the base of the sweatband until the braid is firmly against the sweatband. Spread the pins outward, as close to horizontal as possible. Check by tugging on the braid.
